Song of Ice and Fire is a winning series of epic fantasy novels written by novelist and screenwriter George RR Martin. Martin began writing the series in 1991 and the first volume was published in 1996. Originally planned as a trilogy, currently expected to be a series heptalogía because it has five published and two more planned volumes.

The story of A Song of Ice and Fire is set in a medieval fantasy world, primarily on a continent called Westeros but also on a vast eastern continent, known as Essos. Most of the characters are human but as the series progresses other races listed. There are three story lines in the series: the chronicle of a dynastic civil war for control of Westeros between several noble families; the rising threat of the Others, barely contained by a huge wall of ice that protects the northern West; and the journey of Daenerys Targaryen, the exiled daughter of the king who was murdered in another civil war fifteen years who seeks to return to Westeros to claim their rights ago. These three stories interact and are extremely co-dependent.

The Martin realistically having to raise their characters makes it extremely difficult to classify: very few can be labeled as "good" or "bad", thus moving away from Manichaeism sometimes so abundant in the fantasy genre. The author has earned a reputation for not being afraid to "kill" any character, regardless of whether or not principal, in pursuit of realism.
